Kratom Is Changing: Why Today's Products Are Different

For many years, conversations about kratom focused on the leaves of a tropical tree (Mitragyna speciosa) that grows naturally in Southeast Asia. Traditionally, the leaves have been used in some cultures for centuries, often by chewing fresh leaves or brewing them into tea. Because of this history, many people assume that all kratom products available today are simply dried or powdered leaves with relatively consistent characteristics.

The reality is that today's commercial kratom marketplace looks very different.

Over the past several years, manufacturers have developed an expanding variety of products that go far beyond traditional kratom leaf. Consumers can now purchase capsules, gummies, concentrated extracts, liquid shots, flavored drink mixes, tablets, powders, and highly concentrated compounds marketed as stronger or more effective than traditional products. As the market has evolved, researchers and public health officials have become increasingly concerned that many consumers do not recognize how dramatically these products differ from one another.

Understanding those differences is becoming an important part of substance abuse prevention.

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding kratom is the belief that every product sold under the name "kratom" is essentially the same. In reality, the concentration of active compounds can vary widely depending on how a product is manufactured, processed, or extracted. Some commercial products contain concentrated extracts that are significantly stronger than traditional leaf preparations, while others contain purified or enhanced compounds designed to produce much more powerful effects.

This changing marketplace makes it difficult for consumers to know exactly what they are purchasing.

Recent laboratory testing has found that some commercial kratom products contain concentrations that differ substantially from what consumers might expect. Researchers have also identified inconsistencies between labeled and actual amounts of active ingredients in some products. This means two products that appear nearly identical on store shelves may produce very different effects because of differences in concentration or formulation. These findings have raised concerns among toxicologists, healthcare providers, and prevention professionals about product consistency and consumer safety.

Much of the recent attention has focused on a naturally occurring alkaloid called 7-hydroxymitragynine, often abbreviated as 7-OH.

While 7-OH exists naturally in kratom leaves, it is normally present in only very small amounts. However, some commercial manufacturers now produce products containing concentrated or enhanced amounts of this compound. These highly concentrated products are very different from traditional kratom leaf and have become the subject of increasing concern among federal health agencies because of their opioid-like effects and potential risks.

For the average consumer, these differences are rarely obvious.

A person walking into a convenience store, vape shop, or smoke shop may simply see the word "kratom" on multiple packages and assume they are purchasing similar products. Packaging often emphasizes phrases such as "natural," "plant based," or "herbal," giving the impression that the products are relatively mild or consistent. In reality, products may vary considerably in both composition and potency.

Marketing also contributes to misunderstanding.

Many newer products are promoted as energy boosters, mood enhancers, focus aids, or natural wellness supplements. Colorful packaging, attractive branding, and social media advertising often emphasize benefits while minimizing discussion of possible risks. This type of marketing can create a false sense of security, particularly among young adults who may assume that products sold legally in stores have been thoroughly evaluated for safety.

Unfortunately, legal availability does not necessarily mean a product has undergone the same level of testing required for prescription medications.

For parents, this changing landscape presents a new challenge.

Many adults are familiar with conversations about alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, or prescription medications. Fewer have heard about concentrated kratom products or understand how rapidly this market has evolved. At the same time, young people may encounter these products through social media, online influencers, friends, or retail stores before parents have even heard the terminology.

This is one reason prevention education has become so important.

Rather than attempting to memorize every new product that appears on the market, parents can help youth develop critical thinking skills. Encouraging young people to question marketing claims, recognize that "natural" does not automatically mean safe, and understand that products can vary significantly in strength helps prepare them to make informed decisions throughout their lives.

It is also important for communities to recognize that the substance environment facing today's youth is far more complex than it was just a generation ago.

Previous prevention efforts focused largely on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and a limited number of illicit drugs. Today's prevention professionals must also monitor emerging substances such as concentrated kratom products, 7-OH, tianeptine, synthetic cannabinoids, counterfeit fentanyl-containing pills, and numerous other products that continue entering the marketplace.

For rural communities like Lemhi County, prevention remains one of the most effective tools available.

Our community benefits from strong relationships among families, schools, healthcare providers, businesses, law enforcement, and community organizations. By staying informed about emerging drug trends and sharing accurate, evidence-based information, communities can respond proactively rather than waiting until problems become widespread.

At SSAPCO, we believe education is one of the strongest protective factors we can provide.

Our goal is not to create fear around every new product that appears on store shelves. Instead, we strive to help families understand how rapidly the substance landscape is changing and why staying informed matters. Prevention begins with awareness, open conversations, and helping young people develop the knowledge and confidence to make healthy decisions.

Kratom is no longer a simple conversation about a plant.

Today's marketplace includes a growing variety of products with varying concentrations, different manufacturing processes, and increasingly potent formulations. Understanding those differences is essential for parents, educators, healthcare providers, and community members who want to help protect youth and promote informed decision-making.

As the science continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: communities that stay educated are communities that are better prepared to keep young people safe.
