Normalization Happens Quietly

Normalization is not always obvious. It does not happen through a single event or decision. Instead, it develops gradually through repeated exposure, changing conversations, and shifting attitudes.

When substances are talked about casually or seen as harmless, youth may begin to view them as acceptable. This shift in perception can lead to increased experimentation and risk.

Prevention efforts must focus on maintaining clear and consistent messaging. Communities play a critical role in shaping what is considered normal.

By reinforcing healthy behaviors and expectations, communities can prevent normalization from taking hold.
